Rough Draught Whiskey Bar in College Station

There are plenty of great bars in College Station, but Rough Draught Whiskey Bar (pronounced “rough draft”) stands out from the rest. College Station, Texas is home to Texas A&M University, the largest university in the United States by enrollment. So it should be no surprise that most of the bars in town are geared towards a college clientele. Rough Draught stands out by catering to a more mature crowd than the other bars on Northgate, being a popular spot for grad students and professors, as well as local residents. Despite the more sophisticated crowd, it is still a great bar for game day and is part of the Texas A&M community. In fact, Rough Draught is a great bar for plenty of different occasions including date nights, special occasions, and just hanging out.

The Location

Rough Draught is located in the Northgate District of College Station. This is the main bar and nightlife area of College Station, given that it doesn’t really have a downtown. Northgate is walking distance from Texas A&M University, so if you are on campus then Rough Draught is an easy trip

The Atmosphere

The atmosphere at Rough Draught is what makes it so great. While more sophisticated than most bars on Northgate aimed at the college crowd, it is still a very approachable and inviting bar.

During the day you can find regulars hanging out at the bar relaxing or some grad students getting their work done at a table. At night expect a more conversations and cocktails vibe. If the weather is nice you can expect the patio to be filled during happy hour on Thursdays and Fridays.

This versatility in atmosphere allows you to find the right vibe and time for your visit. If you want to sip a cocktail and write your thesis, then head in around 3pm on a weekday. Then, on Saturday night meet your friends back there to have a couple beers from their tap list while you go over the week that just happened.

The Space

The layout of Rough Draught contributes to its inviting atmosphere. As you walk up to the doors, you move past the front patio with tables and umbrellas for a sunny day. As you walk through the front doors, which are open when the weather is nice, you are greeted by a bar that sports a traditional bar to rest your foot on. The space has character without feeling dirty.

If you walk through the doors to the right there is a second bar connected to the first, with tables along the walls to hang out and catch up with friends. From here you can walk into the pizza portion with booths and you can order yourself a pizza or some cheesy bread. Past the pizza counter there is a second patio out back.

The Drinks

Let’s be honest, the drinks are almost as important as the atmosphere. Lucky for you Rough Draught has great drinks in addition to their atmosphere.

Being a whiskey bar Rough Draught has a long list of whiskeys to choose from that will satisfy every whiskey nerd. If you are trying to get into whiskey or just want to try something new, their knowledgable staff will help you pick one out at a price point you feel comfortable with.

Rough Draught has much more to offer in the way of drinks than just whiskey. They have an extensive beer list that includes 25+ beers on tap, ranging from old standbys to rotating local brews.

Where they really stand out is their cocktails. Rough Draught offers a list of excellently crafted cocktails, including specialty seasonal cocktails. Being a whiskey bar they of course make an excellent old fashioned, and for which they use Buffalo Trace for the house option. If I’m being honest, I think 80% of the drinks I have ordered at Rough Draught have been an Old Fashioned.

The Specials

Let’s be honest, everyone loves a good drink special, and Rough Draught is in no short supply. They have daily themed specials running Sunday through Thursday, the highlight of which is Tuesday Trivia with discounts on Texas beers and whiskeys. Thursday Pint Night is another fan favorite, with a featured brewery handing out swag, accompanied by live music later in the night.

In addition to the daily specials, Rough Draught has an incredibly generous Happy Hour that runs from 2-8pm. During Happy Hour classic cocktails, such as their old fashioned, are discounted, as well as draft beer. This paired with the patio on a nice day makes for an unbeatable combo.

The Pizza

One of my favorite things to do at Rough Draught after getting an old fashioned is to go and get some pizza. A newer addition in the last few years, Rough Draught serves brick oven pizzas to pair with your drinks. In addition to your standards, such as cheese or pepperoni, try one of the inventive fan favorites such as the elote pizza or the PB&J (pepperoni, bacon, and jalapeños) pizza.

Takeaways

Rough Draught is a bar for when you want to be in a college town but not surrounded by typical college students. It maintains a more mature feel while still being plugged into the energy of the university. It has good pizza and great drinks. Whether you are in College Station for a game day or just visiting you won’t go wrong stopping by Rough Draught.
