Cascahuin Tequila Distillery Tour is an excellent way to start your journey into Mexico’s tequila country. Did you know that in 2024 Mexico produced almost 600 million liters of tequila? Considered that national drink of Mexico, tequila has a special place in Mexican culture. Produced from the blue weber agave, this spirit has been distilled in Mexico since the 1600s, and the native peoples had been using agave to make alcohol long before that. Today, tequila distilling is a massive industry with Mexico exporting just over 400 million liters in 2023. Cascahuin Tequila distillery is one of many you can tour in Mexico but one we think is definitely worth your time. This post will tell you all you need to know about how to visit the Cascahuin Distillery and what to expect.
How to get to Cascahuin Distillery

The jumping off point for almost all the tequila distilleries is the city of Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco. Guadalajara has a major airport (GDL) with flights from multiple cities and is a major population center in Mexico.
Once in Guadalajara there are a few ways you can get to the distillery. It is important to know that Cascahuin is located in El Arenal and not the town of Tequila. El Arenal is on the way from Guadalajara to Tequila so the transportation methods are essentially the same, you just get off at a different spot. This also makes it very doable to continue on to Tequila proper for another tour later in the day.
1. Drive yourself or hire a driver.
The first and easiest way is to get to Cascahuin distillery is by car. If you have rented a car you can simply drive and park. You can also hire a driver for the day. Others we spoke to said they were able to get a driver for 130 USD for the day. You can also simply Uber as it is widely used in Mexico, though price is subject to demand.
2. Take the Bus.
The cheapest way to get to Cascahuin Distillery is to take the bus. This way costs a few dollars based on the current exchange rate. There are a few different busses that run basically the same route, so be sure to check at the main bus terminal for the most up to day information. The Tequila Plus bus is the most popular and will take you from Guadalajara to El Arenal, and even to Tequila if you want. You can book tickets online or in person at the main bus terminal in Guadalajara.
The bus it self is similar to a greyhound bus and may even have WiFi depending on the bus company. While inexpensive, this method can be time consuming as the bus is slower than taking a car due to making stops. Most important, for the return trip, there isn’t clearly marked stop. You need to go to the other side of the street from where you were roughly dropped off and wave down the bus when it comes by. If you didn’t book a round trip ticket make sure you have Mexican Pesos on hand so you can purchase a ticket. You can also take the bus further on to Tequila proper if you’d like!

The Distillery Tour

The Cascahuin Tequila Distillery Tour starts with a quick history of the Casacahuin Distillery and the tequila making in the region. You will then be led to where the work starts! You will see workers loading agave hearts, or piñas, into ovens to be baked. Cascahuin still makes tequila the traditional way for the most part so the workers load these ovens by hand!

After baking the juice is extracted from the baked agave. What sets Cascahuin apart is that they still use the traditional stone mill, called a tahona, to extract the juice for one of their tequila varieties. This gives it a different and distinct flavor that is unique among tequilas.
You will also been shown all the fermentation tanks where the alcohol is made. Cascahuin uses both modern stainless steel and traditional concrete vats for fermenting.
Then they will show you where the distillation happens. The tequila undergoes multiple rounds and they will let you drink a bit of the first distillation. It’s quite strong! Then is on to aging and bottling.
The Tequila Tasting!

Now you will get to try some of the tequila made at Cascahuin. Depending on what your package you select you will have up to 6 different varieties to try. Your guide will instruct you on the proper technique for sampling tequila. This will help you get subtle differences in the tequilas. The ones we tried had excellent citrus notes and were quite refreshing. It will really make you appreciate good tequila more.
