Mexico City is known for having an amazing food scene and some of the best restaurants in the world. La Única, located in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City, is an upscale dining restaurant that serves Mexican and steakhouse fare. If you are in Mexico City and looking for a nice dinner out for the La Única should be on your list.

Location

La Única is located in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City. Polanco is known for being an upscale neighborhood with posh shopping and eating. La Única is located in a central area with many shops, restaurants, and bars that borders the park.

How to Get There

If you are staying in Polanco then getting to La Única is very easy. If you’re staying at a hotel such as the Park Hyatt or InterContinental Presidente then it is an easy 15 min walk away.

If you’re staying in other popular neighborhoods such as Roma Norte or Condesa then will will want to take an uber or the metro but it will be a relatively short trip. It’s definitely not impossible to walk but it’s a bit of a hike.

If you are staying farther away in neighborhoods such as Centro or Coyocan, be prepared for a longer trip and possibly consider making a day trip of it.

The Food

The food at La Única was quite delicious, I’ll just say that off the bat. The menu is in English or Spanish. We started off with some short rib croquettes and tortilla chips with salsa. These were an excellent start with some cocktails.

For the main me I got two types of tacos. I know that seems strange to get tacos at an upscale place but I was not disappointed. First I had the skirt steak tacos. These had an excellent flavor to the and surprisingly tender. Second, I had the callejeros tacos, which translates to street tacos. I’m not sure the exact cut of meat for this, but they were good and much larger than I expected. I couldn’t finish them all and took some home with me.

My wife ordered the barbacoa norteña which was way bigger than expected. The barbacoa came out in square molcajete type dish and with a half dozen tortillas on the side. It was kinds of like a fajitas plate style. It was also very tasty and could’ve easily fed both of us by itself.

I was very happy with the quality of the food and I was impressed with portion sizes, especially for an upscale restaurant.

The Price

Given that La Única is located in Polanco and is an upscale restaurant it would be assumed that prices are quite high. While prices were definitely on the expensive side they were not nearly as high as I was expecting.

Overall, I felt it was a good value for the price, especially as upscale restaurants go. Our bill was around $120 USD with conversion at the time, which is by no means a small amount, but I have definitely spent more at lesser restaurants I enjoyed less. As far as Polanco goes this is probably par for the course, given the upscale and expensive reputation the neighborhood has.

Is La Única Worth It?

In my opinion, yes, La Unica is worth a visit. The food was good and while pricey it felt like you got value for your money. If you are staying in Polanco it is a no brainer to swing by for dinner and then grab some after dinner drinks nearby.

While the food was good, if you’re staying in another neighborhood I would try to pair eating here with another activity you want to do so you don’t spend too much time waiting in Mexico City’s notorious traffic just to get dinner.

I think La Única is a good choice to go if you are celebrating something. It’s not a place you go every week or even every month, but for a birthday or anniversary. If you’re in the mood for some street food instead, check out the viral Dino Quesadillas in Roma.
