The Houston Museum of Natural Science is one of my favorite places in Houston. I love science and I love dinosaurs, and this museum has both of them, so it makes for a great way too spend an few hours. If you or your child is a scientist lover then you should definitely go and check out the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
In this guide will cover what the Houston Museum of Natural Science has to offer and what to expect so you can plan for your trip.
How to Get There
The Houston Museum of Natural Science is located in the Museum District of Houston, right next to Herman Memorial Park. If you are staying in downtown Houston or in the Houston Medical District it will be a quick trip. There is even a light rail line that has a stop for the museum.
If you are anywhere else though, like everything in Houston, be prepared to drive at least 30 minutes. Houston is an incredibly car dependent city and lots of traffic. Even if it seem like it should only be a 20 min drive, Houston traffic can strike at any time leading to increased travel times.
Due to it’s location in the Museum District you can easily make a whole day of it and explore other museums or check out the Houston Zoo, which is about a 15 min walk away.
Parking
Parking at the Houston Museum off Natural Science is one of few times parking in Houston is pretty easy. The museum has its own parking garage where you can park for a flat rate. At the time of this writing the rate is $30 for nonmembers and $10 for members, so if you have a membership this will save you over 50% on parking alone. For the most up to date information check out the Houston Museum of Natural Science website.
In addition to the garage there are multiple free surface lots near the zoo where you can park. Be warned though, these lots tend to fill up fast, especially on weekend with nice weather.
If the garage and surface lots are full there is paid street parking and multiple paid garages in the area as well.
Admission
At the time of this writing, general admission to the Houston Museum of Natural Science is $25 for adults and $16 for children (infants under 2 are free). The museum offers discounted admission for military and seniors. There is also Free Admission on Tuesdays from 5 – 8 pm.
Admission for the butterfly center, planetarium, big screen theater, and visiting exhibits are and extra fee.
Memberships are available and include free admission for a year, as well as discounted rates for the extra exhibits.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science is part of the Houston City Pass as well. City Pass is a great way to see multiple different attractions in a city you are visiting for price savings on the typical admission.
Permanent Exhibits
The exhibits at the Houston Museum of Natural Science are spread across four floors, each with its own theme and feel.

The first floor is split into a general science section and the fossil section. In the science section, named Matter and Motion, you will find interactive stations about different STEM disciplines from chemistry to quantum mechanics. There is a giant periodic table of stuff, showcasing the different elements in their real life forms, as well as a Foucault pendulum showing the earth’s rotation, and much more.
The Hall of Paleontology is filled with fossils from multiple different eras in our planets history. This is by far my favorite part of the museum. I have loved dinosaurs my whole life and it never gets old to me strolling through the giant dinosaurs. Sometimes you can also see the workers cleaning real fossils!

The second floor has multiple dioramas. The Texas Wildlife exhibit, showcases different habitats and creatures that can found throughout the Lone Star State. The other wildlife diorama displays wildlife that can be found across the African continent. The Cabinet of Curiosities is a display room with a myriad of sites and trinkets from all over the world.

The third floor is home to the Egyptian exhibit and Native American Exhibit, as well as two visiting exhibits.
The fourth floor is sponsored by Phillips 66 and has exhibits that center around the science of the oil and gas industry in Texas.
The exhibits are set up well so it doesn’t really matter what end you start on. You’ll be able to see all the exhibits without having to double back. Depending how how long you stay in each exhibit and if you read every plaque, I would say prepare to spend around two hours at the museum.
Food and Drink
There is a dining area in the Houston Museum of Natural Science that has two different options for purchasing food, as well as a cafe. Options include burgers, sandwiches, and more. It is important to note that food is not allowed inside the exhibits.
There are also multiple eateries in the Museum District that are within walking distance. If you don’t need to eat at the museum, Houston is home to an excellent food scene with a large variety of cuisines.
Why You Should Visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science
The Houston Museum of Natural Science is a wonderful educational experience for all ages. Given its location in the Museum District, you can easily pair it with the Zoo or another museum for a whole day adventure. It is also one of the few places in Houston where parking is relatively easy, making for a relaxing visit.
